McHugh Planning & Design
There is a small architectural office in Letterkenny, Donegal- where big ideas are nurtured, creativity is colossal and problems, big or small, are treated with curiosity, a pinch of innovation and a whole handful of experience- and the name above the door is Mc Hugh Planning & Design. Established in 2004, with the intention of creating an architectural firm that praises pragmatism and inspires individuality- Mc Hugh Planning & Design embrace the eccentricities of each new brief, while weaving the wisdom of the Company Founder, Francis McHugh, into the mix and fortifying the foundations.
Having studied Construction Technology and Engineering in Letterkenny, and graduating with a distinction, McHugh embarked upon his career path with a wealth of information at his fingertips, an intrinsic interest in design and an inherit knowledge of creation. And after gaining employment with an architectural firm in Killybegs, McHugh’s skill set grew with each year he spent working his way up to project manager. Now a leading member of the firm he established to herald a new era in architecture, McHugh believes that his commitment to continual development is key to his success.
“I started off with the basics and worked my way up through the ranks of the first company I worked for,” company founder, Francis McHugh explained. “It was mostly residential work that I worked on before setting up on my own and I’ve stuck to that brief- that’s where my strengths lie. It’s important to stay on top of your profession and any developments within it. I’m currently looking at the list of new regulations about to be introduced and I’ll be returning to study them to ensure I know the ins-and-outs of them- you have to. You have to be progressing or you’ll get left behind.”
And with the longlist of satisfied clients that McHugh boasts, it would be hard to imagine that Mc Hugh Planning & Design could go anywhere but up. Offering a wide range of services, such as surveys of existing houses, sketch design, planning permission drawings, tender and construction drawings, as well as site supervision- McHugh focuses his attention on creating buildings that are designed specifically for the site on which they are located and which maximise natural daylight, sustainability and energy efficiency. As quality and value are one of the main objectives at Mc Hugh Planning & Design, McHugh does not allow his mind to slip from his clients’ intentions, which guarantees their satisfaction.
“Some clients have a general idea of what they want,” McHugh revealed. “Other clients have a very specific idea and bring photos and drawings- I take any details that they have and work with them until they’re happy- until we’ve reached a plan that grasps their vision and should stand the test of time. I am very hands on with each project and it benefits the clients because they don’t get passed around from architect to architect. They are solely dealing with me and never have to start from scratch when they return to the office. It’s easier for them- and that’s what it’s all about.”
As for the future and the goals of Mc Hugh Planning & Design, it would not be incredulous to say that both look bright, filled with organic light and sustainability. With the firm’s phone persistently ringing and the door to the little office continually swinging open as more and more people hear the name, Francis McHugh, and see the dynamic builds dotted across the country- the big ideas and the buckets full of charisma and commitment that fill the office walls, prove to be a recipe for excellence.McHugh Planning & Design Aughalahy, Carrigart, Letterkenny, Co.Donegal
